    A Almost Normal Day

    It’s hard to believe that we were at the ER till two o’clock in the morning, and 14 plus hours later we were at the Harry’s Roadhouse having early dinner.

    After dinner with our out-of-town friends last night, we got home and watched TV as we usually do. Suddenly my companion sat up from the couch, coughed nonstop, and couldn’t catch his breath. He’s been coughing every day since more than a week. But this time he almost panicked because he had difficulty breathing normally. His instincts told him that a visit to the ER was needed. It turned out that his lungs were infected. He always has COPD, and this experience brought back memories when he needed inhalers to control asthma..

    Now he’s got the medication he needs and is already feeling much better. He even suggested to have an early dinner. For me, having appetite is always a good sign.

    Do you know that this particular type of agave, commonly known as the century plant, once they bloom, they die soon afterwards?

    This morning when I dragged our recycling bin to the curb, I noticed that some of the flowers are opening. This is our second agave that has bloomed. I still get this mixture of happy and sad feeling.. “Soon it will be dead..” I said to myself. “but it certainly is putting on a great show.”

    All Things Fall Apart

    I noticed it a few days ago before our trip. The decorative birdhouses fell on the ground again from the wicked wind. I didn’t bother to lift it up. I figured it might get blown down once more while we were out.

    Even at this moment, the heat is unbearable today. It’s half an hour past nine and the outside temperature is finally cooling down. However it’s like an oven inside the house and will take hours to feel comfortable again. My companion is suffering. He now blames himself not having a ductless air conditioning system installed, which I have repeatedly mentioned to him the past two years. He’s frustrated by the relentless heat and concerned for his health. Therefore he spends most of his time in the bedroom where we have a portable AC. I could handle the high temperature much better, however his moodiness starts to get to me..

    I wanted to blame it on the heat. I wanted to blame it on the house. I wanted to blame it on where we live.. Am I just looking for reasons to finally confront the real issue?

    It wasn’t there 10 minutes ago when I opened the door to our porch to let the cool air in. Then the warm glowing light of sunset caught my attention. I went out, stunned by the transformation. This is one of the many reasons why I love this Land of Enchantment.

    Blame it on jet lag then. Today went by so fast unproductively. I have a hard time remembering anything that I’ve accomplished.

    These two days since we came back from Australia have been stressful for no particular reasons. And the unpleasant high temperature is tough for my companion. This afternoon when I went to check our mailbox, I found our chamisa which I planted the year after we move here is dead. Its gentle green has turned into color of yellow dust. I felt sad, exhausted and tied of it all..

    Today for me was a busy day that went by in a daze. We collected mail from the postal office, bought groceries and had a late lunch before we headed home. Then I was on the computer backing up all the photos from our trip to two different devices. (I’m a bit paranoid about losing any of my photos..) Almost the whole day I was somewhat in a daze. I knew it must be the jet lag, so I pressed on and tried to ignore it.

    It was a really warm day. After the sunlight had weakened, I went out and walked around the house. That’s when I noticed that our agave is about to bloom..

    Today is the last day of June. Looking back, it has been quite a month. But essentially not much has changed. Someone once told me that in life it’s a good thing that all stays the same. I get the point. However, I also believe that the only constant is change. We all need to be aware of that.
