  • Standing Tall Fabulously

Agave flowers in bloom. The sky is blue with some clouds in the background.
    Standing Tall Fabulously

Lower half of our agave flowers are fully bloomed now. This agave, as I probably have mentioned before, is too young to bloom in my opinion. Its flowering stalk stands only about seven feet tall. Still, it stands straight and reaches the sky as high as it can.

  • The Disappearance of the Farm Windmill

The Disappearance of the Farm Windmill

Remember the farm windmill I mentioned a while ago? I was thrilled that the community finally replaced it and went there often just to admire it. About two months ago we noticed that the windmill was gone. At the time we thought it needed repair and would be back up spinning again soon. Everybody here knows how unpredictable and wicked strong the wind can be in Eldorado. I start to think that it’d never be back..

  • Aging and Getting Sort of Homesick

Aging and Getting Sort of Homesick

I realize that I’ve been eating a lot more Asian food lately. It seems the older I get, the more I crave for dishes that resemble what I had when I was younger. They remind me of my motherland and, of course, my mother. She lives by herself even though she has dementia; in my mind an embarrassing situation for my family. Nobody seems to be willing to take on the responsibility. In some ways including myself, I suppose..

  • A Rather Quiet Day.

    A Rather Quiet Day.

In order not to let the parcel exposed to the heat outside of our door, my companion wanted to wait till he had it before going out to do some planned shopping. He got a message that said it’d be delivered between 1:30 to 3:30pm. Then another message saying between 5:30 to 7:30pm. When it finally was delivered at 7:42pm, it was delivered to a wrong address..

So we wasted the whole day waiting for the parcel and never left the house.

The image was captured shortly before sunset, when I felt I could no longer stay inside although outside temperature was still around 85°F..

  • A Almost Normal Day

    A Almost Normal Day

It’s hard to believe that we were at the ER till two o’clock in the morning, and 14 plus hours later we were at the Harry’s Roadhouse having early dinner.

After dinner with our out-of-town friends last night, we got home and watched TV as we usually do. Suddenly my companion sat up from the couch, coughed nonstop, and couldn’t catch his breath. He’s been coughing every day since more than a week. But this time he almost panicked because he had difficulty breathing normally. His instincts told him that a visit to the ER was needed. It turned out that his lungs were infected. He always has COPD, and this experience brought back memories when he needed inhalers to control asthma..

Now he’s got the medication he needs and is already feeling much better. He even suggested to have an early dinner. For me, having appetite is always a good sign.

  • Another Beginning of an End

    Another Beginning of an End

Do you know that this particular type of agave, commonly known as the century plant, once they bloom, they die soon afterwards?

This morning when I dragged our recycling bin to the curb, I noticed that some of the flowers are opening. This is our second agave that has bloomed. I still get this mixture of happy and sad feeling.. “Soon it will be dead..” I said to myself. “but it certainly is putting on a great show.”

  • If Those Clouds Were Speaking..

    If Those Clouds Were Speaking..

If those clouds were speaking, what would they be saying?

We were on our way to town. This particular cloud formation caught our eyes and we immediately pulled over to the shoulder..

  • All Things Fall Apart

    All Things Fall Apart

I noticed it a few days ago before our trip. The decorative birdhouses fell on the ground again from the wicked wind. I didn’t bother to lift it up. I figured it might get blown down once more while we were out.

Even at this moment, the heat is unbearable today. It’s half an hour past nine and the outside temperature is finally cooling down. However it’s like an oven inside the house and will take hours to feel comfortable again. My companion is suffering. He now blames himself not having a ductless air conditioning system installed, which I have repeatedly mentioned to him the past two years. He’s frustrated by the relentless heat and concerned for his health. Therefore he spends most of his time in the bedroom where we have a portable AC. I could handle the high temperature much better, however his moodiness starts to get to me..

I wanted to blame it on the heat. I wanted to blame it on the house. I wanted to blame it on where we live.. Am I just looking for reasons to finally confront the real issue?

  • A Small Pot of Memories

    A Small Pot of Memories

We spent more than two hours at 315 Restaurant and Wine Bar this evening, trying to catch up with lost time. It’s been years since our paths crossed. This time she’s here in the U.S. with her 15 year-old son, who was just a little boy when we last saw him.. How time flies..

Two hours is far from enough to share what’s been going on in each other’s lives. And there were subjects unsuitable for the occasion. But I’m grateful that we had the opportunity to reconnect. Cheers to life!

  • Friday Afternoon Inspirations

    Friday Afternoon Inspirations

Recently I acquired a few books, including a biography of Peter Hujar. To say that Hujar was one of my favorite photographers would be a great understatement. He was my inspiration, and a mentor that I never had. To be able to see his contact sheets is almost equal to having the opportunity to read his private handwritten diary. It’s not so much about his technique; it’s how he sees his subjects..
